Copperheads were Democratic politicians who lived in the North. At that time, the Democratic Party was largely the conservative, Southern-based political party, while the Republican Party was much less conservative and based mainly in the North. These Northern Democrats tended to be strongly opposed to the Civil War, helped spread anti-war Propaganda, and led resistance to the draft.

The Republican Party viewed them as dangerous subversives who were trying to undermine the Union's war effort. For this reason they were given the nickname "Copperheads"- a copperhead being a kind of poisonous snake.
