On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong, the commander of Apollo 11, and Buzz Aldrin, the lunar module pilot, piloted their lunar module, codenamed "Eagle", to a landing on a smooth area near the moon's equator on the Sea of Tranquility.
6 hours later, Armstrong descended the ladder to become the first man on the moon. Aldrin followed him down 20 minutes later. Together, they collected 47.5 pounds of moon rocks and dirt, which they brought back to earth 4 days later.
