The exact founders are not known but there were several pioneering families, perhaps the most famous of whom were John and Andrew Lewis who farmed and surveyed in the area that is Now Greenbrier county a half century before the L&C expedition of 1804-1806.
No one was founder of west Virginia because it was divided on the question of secession but the division was largey geographic. Basically, the people in the western counties were dead set against it. When the state passed an ordinance of secession anyway, they refused to accept it and established a new state government, loyal to the union, and sent a new congressional delegation to Washington. -Dayana <33 :p
