As far as we can tell, the New Testament books were written by followers of "Saint" Paul (Saul of Tarsus) and intended to be read by other followers of "Saint" Paul. No one who actually knew Jesus, such as "Saint" Peter or Jesus' brother James, seems to have any connection to the writing of the New Testament.

Matthew was written for the Jews. Matthew includes many prophecies from the Old Testament foretelling Jesus as the Jewish Messiah and his whole approach is to encourage the Jews to whom he is writing to accept Jesus as their Messiah.

Mark is writing also to the Jews, but his short account is written in haste - during Christian persecution and so it proceeds at a great pace. By concentrating on Jesus' actions - especially his miracles and command over evil - Mark points out to his audience Jesus unique position as Israel's saviour.

Luke was a Gentile - probably a Greek from Antioch. Luke writes to the Gentile population of the world, commissioned to do so by a patron called Theophilus to whom he addresses his account. Luke is concerned with healing (as he was a doctor) and forgiveness, and his systematic and thoroughly researched account was the sort of account preferred by the sophisticated Hellenic and scholastic society.

John, however, is different from the others. He writes for all people with one objective in mind - that the reader too believes in the divinity of Christ. John states as such in his account. He is writing for with all people to accept jesus as their Lord, as one who was an eye-witness to events and as the disciple closest to Jesus.

How many gospel writers were there?

-----------------------There were many gospels written, and four of these were selected for inclusion in the New Testament - the gospels now known as Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. These gospels were originally written anonymously and only attributed by the Church Fathers to the apostles whose names they now bear, later in the second century. However, scholars say that there is no good reason to believe that these gospels were really written by the apostles, and in fact they could not have been written by eyewitnesses to the events they portray. The gospels were written in completely different styles and contain some passages that define very different theologies, so they were certainly written by separate authors. So: the four gospels of the Bible had four different authors, but we do not actually know who they were.

How many gospel authors are there in the Bible?

There are four gospels in the Bible, each written by a different author, so there are four gospel writers. All the gospels were written anonymously and only attributed to the apostles whose names they now bear, later in the second century. There is no good reason to believe that these were the actual authors of the gospels, so we do not know the names of the four gospel writers. John's Gospel might have been written by more than one evangelist.
