The immediate followers of prophet Muhammad (pbuh) during his lifetime are called the "sahabah", whilst those after them are referred to as "Muslimin" (Arabic for males) & "Muslimah's" (Arabic for females) Or "Mukminin" (Arabic for males) and "Mukminah" (Arabic for females). In general, those who follow the teachings brought by prophet Muhammad, pbuh (through Al Quran & the Sunnah's/the prophet's tradition) are called Muslims who practice Islam as their religious faith. you can read more about profit Mohamed (peace upon him .)
All Muslims who follow prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) teachings and Quran instructions since start of Quran revelation by God (and same God worshiped in Christianity and Judaism) to the prophet and until now are followers of prophet Muhammad. However, the first ten followers; who had been informed to be accepted in God Paradise; are:
1) Abu Bakr As-Siddeeq
2) 'Umar ibn Al-Khattaab
3) 'Uthmaan ibn 'Affaan
4) 'Ali ibn Abi Taalib
5) Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqaas
6) Sa'eed ibn Zayd
7) Talhah ibn 'Ubaydullaah
8) Az-Zubayr ibn Al-'Awwaam
9) 'Abdur-Rahmaan ibn 'Awf
10) Abu 'Ubaydah ibn Al-Jarraah
All God prophets since Adam through Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and finally Muhammad (Peace be upon them all) are Muslims per the universal sense of Islam that means submission to God.
Also all the caliphs who rules Muslims are important followers of Islam. The most important names of them are AbouBakr, Omar Ibn Alhkattab, Othman ibn Affan, and Ali Ibn AbouTaleb (May Allah be pleased with them).
There is no religion which has deified Muhammad in the way that Christianity has deified Jesus. Muslims who follow Islam, worship and follow God, who they argue revealed himself most profoundly in this final revelation to Muhammad. A person who follows God in this way is called a MUSLIM.
Just to clarify the position. Christianity's deification of Jesus was as a result debates within Early Christianity about whether Jesus was Divine and/or Human and what the relationship was between these essences. For example, there were Arianism and Socianism, which were the beliefs that Jesus was fully human, and there were Sabellianism and Docetism, which were beliefs that Jesus was fully divine, in addition to Christian Orthodoxy, which is that he was both. As a result, Arianists would argue that Jesus' actions were important, but only insofar as they communicated God's message, as opposed to Orthodox Christians who believed that Jesus was worth following because he was God. Islam is a parallel to the Arianists, who argue that Muhammad's actions were important, but only insofar as they communicated God's message. There has never been an "Islamic equivalent" to Christian Orthodoxy which would hold that Muhammad was worth worshiping. The closest anything has come to this are the Alawites who have immense reverence for Ali, Muhammad's son-in-law and cousin. Those who disapprove of the Alawites often argue that the Alawites have deified Ali, but Alawaites usually reject this claim.
All who love prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and demonstrate this love by following prophet Muhammad teachings and Quran guides and commands are friends to prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
