Sir Edmund Hillary ( a high-sounding name, pun intended) and the Sherpa guide Tenzing Norghay ( various spellings) were the two men on top- however there was a small army of supporting climbers who did not ascend the full summit- one Science Fiction writer used this as an analogy to explain multi-stage rockets. There was a Base camp,, and numerous ascent camps for supplies, etc. Expedition indirectly aided by the British and possibly Australia-New Zealand, Military. Sir Edmund was a New Zealand national.
