The Easter Rising Dublin in 1916 was led by members of the Irish Volunteers, led by Padraig Pearse and Irish Citizen Army led by James Connolly. Although greatly hampered at its outset, the Rising was an attempt to end British Occupation in Ireland. The Irish Volunteers, led by Patrick Pearse held out for a week against superior British Army forces and finally surrendered on Saturday 28 April. In the confusion following the Rising, it became known as the Sinn Fein rebellion although Sinn Fein had no involvement in the Rising itself. Sinn Fein benefited from the confusion and became the leading party in Ireland by 1918.
