Wisconsin was populated by indigenous Americans known as the Potawatomi and Ho-Chunk in the south, the Menominee in the western-central region along Lake Michigan, and the Ojibwe across a large area in the north, along Lake Superior. The Dakota people lived in a smaller region along the Mississippi River, in Wisconsin's driftless region. Many thousands of these people still reside in Wisconsin today.
