On Easter Monday, the 24th of April 1916, Padraig Pearse read out the Proclamation of the Republic outside the General Post Office on O'Connell Street in Dublin. Copies of it were distributed around Dublin on the day. This document declared Ireland's independence.
Jos J. Bouch has written: 'The republican proclamation of Easter Monday, 1916' -- subject(s): History, Ireland (Provisional government, 1916), Printing
It was declared a republic in 1916 by the revolutionaries of the Easter Rising. It officially became one on the 18th of April in 1949 through an act of the Irish parliament. It is still a republic now.
Ireland declared independence from Britain in 1916. After a war of independence, the Irish Free State came into being, separate from Northern Ireland, in 1922. In 1949 it became a Republic.
There have been many, many rebellions in Ireland throughout its history. The 1916 Easter Rising is one of the most well known ones, and which ultimately led to Ireland as we know it today with Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland in 1921.
