Colonel William Travis and Colonel James Bowie.
The Alamo refers to a historical event where Texians were caught off guard outside San Antonio. On the 8th day of the siege the Texians, against all odds, defeated the Mexican soldiers and defended the Alamo.
There were about 187 Texians and about 2,400 soldiers from Mexico.
Colonel William Travis was in charge of the Texians. Sam Houston was leading the Texians but he was not at the Alamo. President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna was the general in charge of the Mexicans on scene at the battle.
The Alamo (Texians lost; not the other way around)
The Texians (what they called themselves) shouted "Remember the Alamo!" and "Remember Goliad!"
It had no strategic value, but it delayed the Mexican Army's advance and gave the Texian Army a chance to consolidate their forces.
There was the Alamo, almost every "Texian" in the fort was killed. The Texians later went on to defeat the Mexican army at the Battle of San Jacinto, under the rallying cry "Remember the Alamo!"
Many significant Americans died during the Battle of the Alamo. Among these, three "Texian" (Texas-American) leaders who died were the following: Almaraon Dickinson, artilleryman and defender of the Alamo; George C. Kimbell, resident of Gonzales and officer of the garrison of Alamo; ; and William Barrett Travis, commander of the garrison of Alamo.
It depends on where you are. If you're in the United States, the enemies were the Mexicans. If you're in Mexico, the enemies were the Texians (These were the men that wanted Texas to become independent from Mexico and become its own country. When the Republic Of Texas existed (1836-1845), people who lived in the Republic were known as "Texians." Not "Texans.") In the eyes of the Americans, the Alamo is seen as a symbol of a fight to the death. But for the Mexicans, it is seen as a symbol of lost dreams of being an undefeated nation.
Being in charge of the Alamo
The advantage that the defenders of the Alamo had were they were behind the protection of the walls of the Alamo which they used as a fort. Bullets that would kill in an open field only hit the walls of the Alamo. Some disadvantages of the Alamo was they were trapped with 10,000 armed soldiers around them, they were limited to the supplies they had inside of their building and they could not retreat. They had to make their stand or die.
No, Stephen F Austin did not. William B Travis was in charge of the military at the Alamo.
