Two important generals for the Union would be Gen. George McClellan and Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. McClellan was the first general to lead the Union army, but he fell out of favor with President Lincoln who fired him and gave his job away to General Burnside. Grant was one of the most successful generals. He led the siege of Vicksburg and many other battles and won.

Did the South have inferior generals compared to the Union in the Civil War?

No. The Confederate army seemed to have more aggressive generals. They were pronged to charge and move instead of stay in a defensive position. This brought a lot of victories at the start of the war but it also resulted in high casualties. I used to play wargames and you learn a lot about the effect a general would have on a battle. Most war games rate the Confederate generals higher than the Union general---on the average.

Was Joseph Johnson a Confederate in the civil war?

Joseph E. Johnston was one of the top Confederate Generals. As the most senior of all the Generals who had resigned from the US Army to join the Confederates, he thought he ought to have been ranked first. But Jefferson Davis ranked him only fourth out of five, because his most recent service had been at a desk (Quartermaster General) and not in the line. This caused animosity between the two for the rest of the war.
