What was the original function of the Jardin des Tuileries?

The name tells the story. Jardin means garden; des tuileries means of the tiles. The garden was part of the grounds of a Palace built on the clay fields where clay tiles had been made in the early 16th century. The palace was built in 1559 for one of the Medicis of Italy with gardens in the Tuscan style. The garden was re-landscaped in 1664 in the formal French style. It is now surrounded by Paris, partially bordered by the Louvre and the Seine, and is the central park of Paris.

Can the Tuilerie building still be seen in Paris today?

== == Alas, no. The palais des Tuileries was one of the earliest parts of the Louvre to be built; it was the Royal residence when the King was brought back to Paris during the Revolution; it was napoleon's residence during the Empire, and used also by the restored Bourbons until 1830, the Orleanist monarchy until 1848, and by Napoleon III until 1870. Alas, in the disturbances of the Commune after the fall of the Second Empire and the Siege of Paris in 1870, the Palais des Tuileries was burned down.
