It was a Union victory and was part of the overall campaign against Vicksburg, Mississippi.One of the corps under General Grant marched rapidly inward to Port Gibson, about 30 miles south of Vicksburg. A small and outflanked Confederate force tried to intercept the attack, however, they were defeated.
