The Battle of Stones River is also known as the second Battle of Murfreesboro. It took place in Tennessee between December 31, 1862 and January 2, 1863. The results were inconclusive, however, Confederate General Braxton Bragg chose to retreat.
The Union (North) maintained control of Middle Tennessee and the Tennessee River, and reinforced defenses around Murfreesboro following the Battle of Stones River. Although the battle itself (began December 31, 1862) was not a tactical victory for either side, the Confederates were kept out of central Tennessee.
