The first Olympic gold medal in Weightlifting was won by Viggo Jensen of Denmark in two-handed lift at the 1896 Games in Athens.
The event consisted of lifting a barbell with two hands. Jensen and Launceston Elliot of Great Britain both lifted 111.5 kg (245.8 pounds) but Jensen was awarded the gold on the basis of the 'style' of his lift, which was the rule for breaking ties. Elliot was awarded the silver medal and Sotirios Versis of Greece won bronze.
