Hit and Run tactics are forms of guerrilla warfare. Guerrilla warfare is used when they don't have a strong enough conventional army to fight their opponent. In Vietnam, the VC weren't strong enough to take on the US Army in open combat (conventional warfare); so they used guerrilla warfare. The NVA were a different matter, they were regular soldiers (draftees) like their US & ARVN counter-parts, pitched conventional battles occurred between those forces. Great Britain fought Americans in both guerrilla and open warfare battles for 8 years, or there abouts. They had to transport men and logistics (supplies) across the sea (Atlantic Ocean) for those 8 years. The whole affair was a drain and a pain in their bottoms! America (to Britain) was but a jungle full of disease's and savages, and after 8 years of combat (warfare) they decided the "colonies" were no longer worth the blood of another Englishman! So, they simply did what their current antagonists would do 150 years later (Vietnam); they "declared a victory and went home!"
