Although it ended in a ceasefire, after the war India captured more than double the land of Pakistan than Pakistan did of India and lost less soldiers. So it can be said that India won the war.

Losses were relatively heavy-on the Pakistani side, twenty aircraft, 200 tanks, and 3,800 troops. Pakistan's army had been able to withstand Indian pressure, but a continuation of the fighting would only have led to further losses and ultimate defeat for Pakistan. Most Pakistanis, schooled in the belief of their own martial prowess, refused to accept the possibility of their country's military defeat by "Hindu India" and were, instead, quick to blame their failure to attain their military aims on what they considered to be the ineptitude of Ayub Khan and his government."

the war started when Pakistan launched operation Gibraltar to liberate Kashmir and make it a part of Pakistan .India however successfully managed to repel the Pakistani offensive and in retaliation , crossed the international border and invaded Pakistan.Indian forces managed to capture Pakistani territory up till the city of Lahore after which Pakistani army managed to push India back across the border.India then launched an offensive in Kashmir in which Indian forces successfully captured a strategic point in Pakistani Kashmir called Haji Peer peak which gave a commanding view of the valley.After which there was ceasefire orders issued by the United Nation and the Tashkent declaration of peace was singed by India and Pakistan. The official result is inconclusive however exerts believe that India had the upper hand when the declaration was singed
