∙ 8y agoAustria and France had many wars with many different outcomes, the Franco-Prussian War was NOT one of them. The Franco-Prussian War pitted France against Prussia or Germany, depending on what term you use for the Prussian-led German Confederation. Austria was neutral in that war having been exhausted by the Austro-Prussian War of 1867, which was only three years earlier.
Prussia won the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, even capturing French Emperor Napoleon III in the Battle of Sedan. The result of the war was the complete unification of Germany under Prussian leadership and the annexation of the French states of Alsace and Lorraine to Germany.
France won the most recent prior war with Austria, which was the Second Italian War of Independence of 1859 and also known as the Franco-Austrian War. France assisted Sardinia in the process of Italian Unification by soundly defeating Austria and forcing Austria to concede the Lombardy region to Sardinia. As compensation, Sardinia ceded France the regions of Nice and Savoy, which were less necessary in Italian Unification.
