It had been revealed to Simeon, the man who spoke these words (Luke 2:26), that he would not die until he had seen the Christ, the LORD'S anointed one. When Simeon saw Jesus he recognised him as being the Messiah. Then Simeon said to God "Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in peace, According to Your word; For my eyes have seen Your salvation". Simeon was saying he could now leave this world in peace because he had seen God's saviour, who had been promised in the Old Testament.
