Beverly Sills sang only 14 performances of the role of Queen of the Night in Mozart's "The Magic Flute." Her first was in early 1964 in Boston and her last was in late 1967 at New York City Opera (details of each performance can be found at www.beverlysillsonline.com/annals.htm). After that time, she purposely retired the role from her repertory. She wrote in her two autobiographies that she did not like the role because, despite it's two spectacular showpiece arias, it requires only a small amount of time on stage. She stated that she used her time backstage to write holiday cards and other correspondence. Sills did not record the role or the two arias in the studio, but there are extant live audio recordings of several complete performances. She appeared in a Canadian Broadcasting Corporation telecast of a staged performance in 1966, which has not been issued commercially. There is an excerpt from that performance (in which she sings the last half of the Queen's second aria) on the DVD "Beverly Sills: Made in America." -Roy
