A:It is easy to believe that because the book is known as Matthew's Gospel, it must have been written by the disciple Matthew and therefore written by a Jew to his fellow Jews in Palestine. That has been th Christian consensus for centuries. However, although this disciple would have known Aramaic and, possibly Hebrew, Matthew was written in Greek, a strange choice if he wanted to communicate with Palestinian Jews for whom Greek was a foreign language that many would not even have understood, as well as being a symbol of foreign domination.

In fact, the attribution to Matthew, and therefore the name 'Matthew's Gospel', comes from the second century. Before then, the gospel was unsigned and anonymous. So we do not know who the author was, nor to whom the author was writing.

Where was luke when he write his gospel?

We do not know where Luke was when he finished his final composition of the gospel. Luke was not an eye witness to the happenings in the gospel he wrote, but relied on eye witness, history, and other archives for his writing's. He interviewed many persons in many places (towns, villages etc.) and so probably kept a ledger (Diary) of sorts and at some point in time and place wrote his gospel.

Was Luke a Greek doctor who wrote a Gospel?

A:Paul apparently had a companion called Luke, who was a physician. Whether he was actually Greek or was from another part of the Greek-speaking world is hard to establish for certain. The second-century Church Fathers attributed Luke with writing the third New Testament gospel, which had until then been anonymous, but this attribution is unlikely to be correct. So: Luke was a doctor; he might have been a Greek doctor; but he did not write a gospel.
