There is not a single date, or a book as the novel, that everybody agrees on. But it is generally safe to say that the Modern novel started with Don Quixote(1605)
The English novel however, starts a century later, with Robinson Crusoe(1719), though some people push the date back as far as Thomas Mallory's Le Morte d'Arthur(1485)
The Tale of Genji, written by Murasaki Shikibu in Japan around the 11th century, is often considered the first novel in world history. It tells the story of court life and relationships in Heian Japan.
Some argue that Piers Plowman by William Langland is the first work that can be called a novel, although it is written in verse. It was written in England circa 1360-1387. See link.
