The idea came about because of the surge of immigrants in the late 1940s and early 1950s in New York City. Originally the musical was supposed to be about a gang of Jewish immigrants rivalling a gang of Catholic Americans, but this plot was felt to have been seen before, and so it was changed to Americans vs. Puerto Ricans, because that idea felt much more original and relevant to the current times.
