Saint Agasthya was a contemporary and like a teacher to Sri Rama. After returning from Lanka following his victory, Rama reached Tamil Nadu via Thalai Mannaar and Rameswaram and went to bow before Agasthya, asking the saint to accept him as a student. After these incidents and Rama's return to North India, Agasthya wrote Ramayana in Tamil which is considered as the most unbiased Ramayana. Agasthya Ramayana was an independent creation, perhaps written even before Valmiki's, written nearly at the time of Rama, and the first Ramayana in Tamil. The famous Tamil poet of the thirteenth century, Kambar, also wrote a Ramayana which is known as Kamba Ramayana, but it is a translation of Valmiki's 24000 verse-strong epic into Tamil. It is not a verbal translation but a loose retelling in 11,000 stanzas, an adaptation created to suit Tamil tastes, without hurting Tamil sentiments, written upon the urge of the king.
