This was a common attitude in the 1700's and girls/women were considered second class. Men/boys controlled all aspects of business and family. The idea that a woman or girl should learn to read or write was not considered to be valid. Women were to raise the children, keep the house, help with the farm and help harvest crops. The general attitude was it wasn't necessary for women/girls needed to be educated.

So surely, somebody who is inteligent will help others solve their problems and those who are learned will get something from any input.
