It seems that the city was built in the not-so-distant future. Maybe between 2030 and 2100. The people of Ember were supposed to exit 220 years after that. Maybe around 2300. Of course, they came out about 5 decades late which would have put their time of exit sometime around the year 2350.

This book was about two kids named Doon and Lina that try and find a way out of Ember because it's dying. It is dying because they're running out of food and the generator is dying. But they can't leave because Poppy, Lina's little sister rips up the directions and now Doon and Lina have to try and put it back together. The directions say that the way out of Ember is on the river but everybody thinks that's not the way out because people have drowned and have never came back because it just swallows you. My favorite characters in this book were Doon and Lina because they get caught trying to spread rumers that the mayor has a secret hiding place with a lot of things like more supplies. I liked this book because it talked about the environment and how to take care of it. You should read this book because you should always trust people. I would recommend this book for grades 5-6.

This book was about an underground city that was built to last only 200 years to save the human race from a nuclear war. The citizens of Ember have no idea that there is a world of light above their city. The light of Ember comes from giant flood lights hanging in the sky. Embers power comes from a huge generator. The great lights of Ember have kept the underground city bright and wonderful for centuries but now those lights are beginning to flicker……. My favorite character in this book was Doon, because he is a thinker and over all problem solver. I liked this book because it is a good story of finding or doing the impossible against all odds. You should read this book because it is easy to pick up and understand. I would recommend this book to everyone!

This book was about two small-town kids, Doon and Lina who are depressed and eager because they're beloved city is slowly dying. When blackouts happen frequently, food is being shortened and someone extremely important is stealing, ludicrous things happen. When the people of Ember don't know they are underground and don't believe there is a way out they go to drastic measures. Poppy, Lina's sister finds an important document, for egress. What does egress mean? Will the blackouts stop? Will all Emberites lose food and power? Find out all of this and more in The City of Ember. My favorite character in this book was Poppy, because for such a small toddler she does a lot. Imagine being a child and having all of Embers mankind depend on your shoulders. I liked this book because it's a real page turner, Jeanne uses lots of foreshadowing to make you interested. Also if you love adventure, thrill and action this book is just right for you. Ember is so interesting it makes you think, it mak...This book was about two 12-year-olds named Lina and Doon that discover a conspiracy in the mysterious city of Ember. They must find a way to escape "the only light in a dark world" AND find a way to tell everyone. Along the way they discover that Ember isn't the only light. To sum it up: the best book ever. Apparently, In the fifth grade you have to read it. So you don't HAVE to read it. It's a major spoiler for the fifth grade. My favorite character in this book was Doon because he was very smart and clever and wasn't considered a dork. I liked this book because it is a great adventure story. You should read this book because it is very sneaky. The author gives you clues and you don't even know. It is also a good adventure.This book was about Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow who are two people that live in the city of Ember, where there is a shortage of necessary supplies and a lot of blackouts. But when these two very different characters come together to figure out a message that could change everything. The people of Ember live forever there is no turning back. My favorite character in this book was Lina because she was always so determined to figure out the message. I liked this book because while I was reading it kept me on the edge of my seat. You should read this book because it is very interesting and fun to read. I would recommend this book to anyone in grades 3-5.
