As far as I can remember, he was a bit stoned lying in a field in Spain and staring at the stars, after having hitchhiked around a lot of Europe when he came up with the idea. Don't remember any further details, but it's kind of what you would expect from someone who was a scriptwriter for Dr. Who. Great stuff.

He was broke, was hitchhiking and got and was sleeping in a field hungry for 2 days, with a book that says how to hitchhike Europe in 10 pounds(or something like that). when he looked at the sky and thought if there was a guide to hitchhike the galaxy as well and wrote the book.

he had loads of time on his hands

The film version was written by Garth Jennings, Karey Kirkpatrick, Douglas Adams and Nick Goldsmith.

The film originally was going to be written by Douglas Adams, but he unfortunately died and it was completed by Garth Jennings and Karey Kirkpatrick.

It was based (loosely) on the novel and radio show by Douglas Adams
