The Book of Genesis is the first book in The Bible. Its authorship is traditionally attributed to Moses, presumably during the forty years wandering in the Negev desert, although there is no biblical support for this view. In fact, evidence internal to the book demonstrate that it actually had several authors, in stages separated by several centuries.

Scholars say that one anonymous author, now known as the Yahwist, wrote early material for the book in the southern Hebrew kingdom of Judah. Meanwhile, or perhaps a century later, another anonymous author, now known as the Elohist, wrote early material for the book in the northern Hebrew kingdom of Israel. These were later combined into a single manuscript by a source now called 'JE'. The Deuteronomist, living in the city of Jerusalem, added some material during the reign of King Josiah. The Priestly Source made important additions to the book during the Babylonian Exile, probably in Babylon. The final redaction was carried out by someone whom scholars simply call "the Redactor", probably back in Jerusalem after the Return from Exile.
