The geocentric model, also known as the Ptolemaic system, held for over a thousand years. It was standardized by the Greek astronomer Ptolemy. Based on his model, the Earth was at the center of the universe and the sun and planets revolved around it. It was the accepted model up until the 1500's when Copernicus put forth is heliocentric model, one that placed the sun at the center and the planets in orbit or it.
Aristotle divided the Universe into two spheres: one above the Moon and the second under it. This enabled him to explain why there is no problem to move objects on the ground and in the air whereas the stars are stable.
Bruno did a pretty good job of it, and was burned at the stake for his troubles. Galileo's observations of the solar system were very thorough, and he had a decent telescope with which to record his findings. The evidence Galileo gathered was quite compelling.
Ptolemy, but he was wrong the sun is in the center and planets have elliptical orbits.

Aristotle if thats how you spell it :)
could you re-phrase that? do you mean who came up with the initial theory of the universe and it's evolution? if so, to claim it was/is wrong is very relative. no matter how you look at it the universe is almost all theoretical Physics.
Planet Earth was held to be the centre of the Universe and everything else in the sky was held to revolve around Earth.
Ptolemy's geocentric model was used for over 1500 years.
Claudius Ptolemy
Lots of people have wrong theories about the Universe.
Aristotle, the wrong-est man ever to have live on the Earth.
The Ptolemaic theory of the planets lasted 1400 years, and it lasted so long because it was not very wrong. But when Galileo discovered all the phases of Venus, the theory's days were numbered. This did not happen until Galileo came along with his telescope to study the night sky.
