Best Answer

Aluminium oxide is called Amphoteric oxide because it has both acidic and basic properties.

Basic property:

Al2O3 + H+ ----> Al3+ + H2O

Acidic properties:

Al2O3 + OH- + H2O----> [Al(OH)4]-

Why are aluminium and zinc oxides called amphoteric oxides?

These oxides are called amphoteric because they can dissolve in acidic solutions to form metal cations in the solutions but can also dissolve in strongly alkaline aqueous solution to form oxyanions of the metals: aluminate or zincate.

What are amphoteric metals?

Amphoteric is a chemical entity (ion or molecule) which can react as an acid but also as a base. Compounds of beryllium, tin, aluminium, lead, zinc have amphoteric hydroxides and oxides.

What makes a firework blue?

A metal called aluminium.

Which elements form amphoteric oxide?

Aluminium, Silicon, Zinc, Iron, and many more

Why only zinc amongst metal reacts with base?

it is a amphoteric metal and it can react with both acid and base. amphoteric metal shows properties of both acid and base

What is nature of the oxide formed by aluminum?

Aluminium forms the oxide Al2O3, often called alumina or corundum. It is a hard substance. Chemically it is classed as amphoteric because it reacts with acids and bases. It forms on the surface of aluminium very rapidly and passivates the surface. Aluminium is actually a reactive metal but because ot the invisible, thin oxide layer appears quite inert; without the layer aluminium would react with water to generate hydrogen.

Is there iron in aluminium?

Aluminium is a metal (an element), not an alloy. This means that it's only made up of aluminium atoms. It has no other impurities in it. Aluminium ore is called bauxite. This has aluminium plus other substances in it, but aluminium on its own is a metal with just aluminium atoms in it.

What are examples of amphoteric oxides?

From the USDOT Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration Glossary: A metal that is susceptible to corrosion in both acid and alkaline environments. Aluminum is an example of an amphoteric metal.

Is aluminium a noble gas or a transition metal?

Neither. Aluminium is a group 13 metal or a main group metal.

Why metal oxide are amphoteric in nature?

according to acid base definations base is such thing which accept proton easily.in metal oxides ,metal has ability to give proton and oxygen has ability to accept it.both are strong conjugat acid and base.so the metal oxides are amphoteric in nature.

Is aluminium is metal?

Aluminium is generally considered as a metal, but it shows some properties of metalloid also.

Is alumium a metal?
