Bonifacio was self educated and had read books about the French Revolution, biographies of the Presidents of the United States, and studied colonial and civil penal codes. In 1892 he joined a peaceful organization that called for political reforms in the Spanish government in the Philippines called, La Liga Filipina(The Philippine League). Following the arrest and exile of La Liga Filipina's leader Jose Rizal, the group disbanded.

Bonifacio believed that there needed to be an armed revolution to free the Philippines from Spanish rule. The same day he learned of Rizal's arrest, he and others formed the Katipunan organization. Katipunan was an underground society who felt strong in freeing the Philippines from Spain by armed forces if neccessary. Bonifacio and the others performed a blood compact and used their blood to sign their names as members of the society. Being a freemason, the Katipunan used principles of masonry in its organization. They implemented codes, hand signals, symbols and secret initiation ceremonies in accepting new members. They viewed all men, rich or poor as equals and were taught to care for one another in sicknesss and need.

Andres Bonifacio founded the Katipunan as a means to gain independence from Spain.

Emilio Aguinaldo was he a traitor or a hero?

Emilio Aguinaldo is a traitor and a villain! He usurped the authority of the Supremo Andres Bonifacio citing that Bonifacio has no education! Bonifacio was the founder of the KKK and who begun the Philippine Revolution against Spain! After an election, Bonifacio was name Director of the Interior but still protested by Tirona due to his lack of education! After that, Bonifacio became angry and declared that the election was void and left to form his own government. Aguinaldo ordered his men to hunt him and they succeeded to kill the man who was the originator of the Philippine Revolution! With this hideous act by Aguinaldo, can you consider him a hero? For me he is a villain and a traitor!

Why was Emilio Aguinaldo does not considered as a national hero?

He headed the murder of Andres Bonifacio and General Luna

Emilio Aguinaldo a hero or a Traitor?

Traitor. He pledged allegiance to the Americans & to the Japanese during their occupation. Is that a hero? Did Rizal, Bonifacio, Antonio Luna & Gregorio del Pilar and others do that?

How come Jose Rizal became the Philippine hero?

According to Renato Constantino, when the American government conquered the island of the Philippines from the Spanish government in 1896, the American government established a commonwealth government after the Spanish revolutionary government ceased to govern the country. At this time of the Philippine history, Filipinos under the commonwealth government started to frame up Filipino national identities. When the question on who would be the national hero arose, whether Rizal or Bonifacio, the American government "guided" the Filipino people to choose Rizal. The American rationale was based on Rizal's peaceful propaganda and diplomatic approaches in attaining Philippine freedom and independence, unlike Bonifacio who chose a bloody revolution. Whether this assessment is accurate or not, Dr. Rizal has been considered a hero of the Philippines from the outset: a public holiday was declared honouring Dr. Rizal in 1898, whereas that for Bonifacio was not declared until 1921. Dr. Rizal was considered to be his inspiration by Bonifacio himself. Even without the assistance of US propaganda, Rizal would have been honoured as a hero in the Philippines. Perhaps the effect of the propaganda was less to boost Rizal and more to denigrate Bonifacio.

Why should Andres Bonifacio be the national hero of the Philippines instead of Jose Rizal?

Bonifacio should have been the national hero because he wanted for an ultimate freedom for the Philippines and be separated from the authorities of Spain and that is through a revolution. Well it is true that Bonifacio has somewhat got this idea of freedom from Rizal but it is Bonifacio who put it into action, what is an idea without an action? . . . action speaks louder than words of ideas. Rizal was coward that he didn't support the revolution plan of bonifacio, but then the revolution was succesful. Also, Rizal was just an American-sponsored-hero, they just insisted Rizal to be the national hero because Americans were afraid that if it was Bonifacio that was the hero, the Filipinos would also revolt the same way as of Bonifacio's.

Was Andres Bonifacio declared a Philippine national hero?

No. Andres Bonifacio is one of the Heroes of the country, but he was not declared as a national hero of the country. In fact, despite popular belief to the contrary, nobody, not even Dr. Jose Rizal, has been declared by the Philippine government to be a national hero. Both Bonifacio and Rizal appear on unofficial lists of national heroes. Rizal is popularly called "the national hero", but since Renato Constantino declared in 1970 that Rizal was a "US sponsored hero" and that the Americans deliberately promoted him over Bonifacio to discourage dissent over their colonization of the Philippines, many now think that Bonifacio is a more important hero than Rizal. Both Rizal and Bonifacio have national holidays named for them.
