It probably overheated due to misfiring or poor condition of engine tune. This overheating causes the internal core of the converter to break up and rattle.
Replace the converter but make sure the engine is tuned up properly and firing on all cylinders. Something more likely and much cheaper to fix: loose heat shields. Thin metal covers that rust and come loose.
Easy enough to crawl down there and check.
NOTE: don't do what I did and just pull heat shields off and forget about it. My 87 Taurus found a way to drip oil onto the exposed pipe and the resulting smoke was pulled into the heater blower - I smelled like a muffler every time I drove the car.

I want to know how many catalytic convertes are on a 2002 ford taurus?
The 1992 Ford Taurus has two oxygen (O2) sensors. Both O2 sensors are located upstream of the catalytic converter with one on each exhaust bank.
Yes, the Taurus can run without the catalytic converter--it is not necessarily good for the engine, but disconnecting it will cause it to fail emissions testing. If you've seen the Honda Civics running around smoking like a factory, this is caused by no electrolytic converter. The O2 sensor could be in the exhaust pipe between the manifold and converter.
There are typically 4. * Driver Side Cylinder Bank (front) * Passenger Side Cylinder Bank (rear) * Before 3rd Catalytic Converter * After 3rd Catalytic converter
The CO stands for Carbon Monoxide. You may need a new catalytic converter.
