First, because the "high priestly prayer" of Jesus, his final prayer before being arrested in the garden on the night of his passion, was for his disciples to be one. (John 17).
If Jesus prayed for Christian unity, no Christian can deny it to him, either through deliberate promotion of division or through inaction and willful ignorance.
The mission of the Christian church is evangelization, but this mission is impeded by the division of the churches. A divided Christianity is a stumbling block to faith, and a scandal to the world.
Ecumenism requires first of all a conversion of heart, and a willingness to learn from the other through dialogue and an exchange of gifts. All Christians are called to help heal the divisions of the church, so all Christians need to study ecumenism to know what we agree on, what the causes of division are, and what can be done to overcome them. We need to know what we, personally and locally, can do about it.

Christians, those who support Israel, also support Bethleham
In my experience as a Christian, the Church plays a vital role. The Church is a place where Christians can gather together and worship the Lord together. Christians can receive fellowship with other Christians, gaining support, friendship and comradery. The Church plays (or should play) a vital role in the community, too, offering help to the poor and needy, reaching out hands to support those in physical, spiritual and emotional need.
