Death Valley became a national park largely through the efforts of two men who were both employed by a mining company called Pacific Coast Borax. When the white, salty mineral borax was discovered in Death Valley in 1881 an operation was established which used long teams of mules to haul out the mineral in giant wagons. Some years later the company promoted their household product using the image of 20 mules hauling borax from Death Valley. They called the product 20 Mule Team Borax. The man who had that idea was Stephen Mather. The use of all media including print, radio, television and movies to advertise 20 Mule Team Borax made Death Valley more famous than it already was. It became synonymous with borax and a household word. In 1925 Pacific Coast Borax mining left the Death Valley region for a bigger strike about 150 miles away. They turned their miners' quarters into tourist rooms and in 1927 felt a National Park would be a good way to promote tourism. By then their old employee, Stephen Mather, was director of the National Park Service. He felt it would be a conflict of interest if he approved it. Six years later in 1933 Mather's successor, a local boy from Bishop, California, Horace Albright,

lobbied President Herbert Hoover to make Death Valley a national park. Hoover proclaimed it a national monument and then in 1994 with the passage of the California Desert Protection Act it became a National Park. Horace Albright later went to work for Pacific Coast Borax so both Stephen Mather and Horace Albright

are the men most responsible for Death Valley becoming part of the national park system. You can see the entire story in a dvd called The Twenty Mule Team of Death Valley and the book of the same title at http://www.goldcreekfilms.com
