What does Death Valley look like?

Sand, rocks and cacti with 90 degree temps in the shade.

Not Exactly. The most surprising part of Death Valley are the extraordinarily tall mountains that sandwich the valley. Next is the white alkali, salty valley floor. Then there's the underground river that bottoms out at Badwater - the deepest spot in the Western hemisphere 282 feet below sea level. There are springs in the mountains and spectacular sand dunes in the middle and southern end of the Valley. Temperatures can get well over 100 in the shade in summer. I was there when it hit 127. Always have plenty of water.

How do monument valley has been formed?

First of all, the question should have been: How was Monument Valley formed? Monument Valley (U.S.A.) is made from sandstone and is an ancient seabed. Exposure to the atmosphere and weather has gradually, over millions of years, eroded much of the soft sandstone, leaving the slightly harder portions standing. The erosion is still ongoing but rather slow, so in a few more million years Monument Valley will be just a flat desert, assuming that the world's climate does not change sufficiently to turn the area into more fertile land. Global climate changes are a natural phenomenon, and there are some good examples to prove this: Alaska is currently very cold, and Saudi Arabia is a hot desert. Both have large oil reserves, but all crude oil originates from plant matter, namely ancient trees that grew in swampy rainforests (the water stops fallen trees rotting too quickly). As new layers of matter are deposited on top of the dead forest the pressure compacts the wood first into coal and later into oil. Nowadays there is no sign of such forests in either of the two countries in my example, but the oil is there. This means that long time ago Alaska had a tropical climate, and Saudi Arabia received plenty of rain! So the future of Monument Valley is quite hard to predict; it might even become a sea bed once more, and there is no politician who could stop this happening regardless of how much tax is levied on the population of the world...and all politicians know this!

Is the death of Michael Collins the topic of the song 'The Valley of Knockanure'?

No

The Valley of Knockanure is about Patrick Dalton, Jerry Lyons and Patrick Walsh, three young Irish men killed by the Black and Tans in May 1921. The lyrics highlight the participants

"There was Lyons and Walsh and the Dalton boy, they were young and in their prime

They rambled to a lonely spot where the Black and Tans did hide

The Republic bold they did uphold, tho' outlawed on the moor

And side by side they fought and died in the Valley of Knockanure."

Will you actually die if you go to Death Valley?

You certainly will if you go there with nothing to drink or no money to buy something to drink from the gift shop. You certainly don't want to go walking around with less than a gallon of water handy. Phil

Why is death valley called death valley?

For westward travelers in the 19th century on their way to California, Death Valley was a very difficult place to cross. Temperatures are very high and water is very scarce. Not all travelers or their animals that were pulling their equipment survived the crossing.

In 1849 westward bound gold-seekers tried to take a shortcut from the main route. They parted ways with the main wagon train heading down from Salt Lake, Utah. Most turned back but a stubborn few kept moving westward across Nevada and inevitably stumbled into the lowest, driest, hottest spot in the entire Great Basin (in the Western Hemisphere for that matter). Fortunately it was winter. Their experiences were horrific and one of those pioneers died in Death Valley. But when the others escaped and looked back, one of them said "Goodbye Death Valley," probably referencing the 23rd Psalm from the Bible, and the name stuck. Check out Weird Tales 3: The Pioneer's Lost Trunk for the story.

The story for Death Valley's name is interesting, and it is on the Death Valley National Park webpage: http://www.nps.gov/deva/historyculture/the-lost-49ers.htm
Simply because the temperature gets so hot there during the daytime, that almost nothing can survive there for any length of time.

When did it last rain in Death Valley?

Death Valley is dry, but it's certainly not rain-free. If I look at weather.com

(on the date of the posting, October 15, 2007), there was none in September or October. We need the station record for the entire year, but it's not easy to get a hold of. It is out there, at the NCDC, but it's behind a paywall.

And, for the record, yes it does torque me off that I can't get data from a government web site from the government that I paid to collect it without paying for it again. If it required someone to go dig for it and mail it to me, I wouldn't mind paying for it, but it's an automated web server burping out text. That's ridiculous.

What would the effects on climate in the western United States be if Death Valley were an inland sea connected to the Gulf of Cortez?

Probably not a lot. The climate of the West is generally dominated by large high pressure areas that are due to global-scale circulation. Adding more moisture at the surface isn't going to change the fact that dry air is descending over the region, which pretty well cuts off vertical development. Look at places where there is an arm of the sea reaching into a desert region: the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf are the best examples. Right on the eastern shore there are very hot and humid microclimates, but you don't have to get too far away for it to go right back to being a regular desert again.

Death Valley was formed with the moving of the earth pushing up and out away from the valley over millions of years. It was not carved out by water as was the Grand Canyon but by the movement of the earth. Giant "plates" moving and pushing out.

How did death valley get its name?

From 1849 to 1850 a group of pioneers settled in this unknown valley but died in winter of hunger and thirst. That's how Death Valley got it's name.... of death and despair.yup
Here is the story:

A long time ago, there were emigrants moving to California, and they took a short cut. The short cut is also known as the Death Valley. It took them months to travel through the Death Valley. And one guy died during that trip, so then the lady said "Goodbye Death Valley" when they were leaving the place.

But there are many stories to it too, you can take a look at this website:
