It is not known for certain, but there are many theories. Large whales, like humpbacks, orcas, sperm whales and even young blue whales, as well as many types of dolphins certainly seem to be very playful.
It could be that the dolphins are just simply doing it for pleasure. It is well known that pods of dolphins will play games with pieces of seaweed as they hunt for food, and that many others - including the spinner - are indeed very acrobatic, so why would the dolphins not do it for that reason?
It could also be to rid themselves of baracles and whale lice. Just like fleas do to cats, barnacles and whale lice do irritate whales. Jumping out of the water may be to try and remove the whale lice, but not many people agree with that. After all, beluga whales are known to rub themselves against the sea bed in the spring to relieve itches.

∙ 13y agoDolphins jump out of the water to get air. Since they are mammals and not fish they do not have gills so there for they have to come out of the water to get air.

Dolphins jump for MANY reasons, spinner dolphins for instince are very energetic and spin when they jump, they jump for fun, other dolphins may use this as a signal to other dolphins that they need help with catching sardines etc. Some dolphins jump because it is easy for them to look ahead when they are higher than the sea, they may use it for navigational purposes, sometimes just jump to express hapiness and their excitement, or they may jump because they are full of energy and want to play. Dolphins sometimes use it to communicate things to other dolphins, other times for hunting and some may jump for the sake of jumping. =)To breath or for people to see them.
