Iwo Jima allowed US bombers an emergency landing base for bombers. The seizure of Iwo Jima allowed for sea and air blockades, and would provide the ability to conduct intensive air bombardment and to destroy the enemy's air and naval capabilities. This made ending the war easier. Also the way the Marines fought on that island gave them a new name and a more respectable reputation. The raising of the flag gave them the support they needed. This also allowed them to realize that the U.S. needed harsher measures to fight the Japanese.
