Japan is an "Island Empire." Like Great Britain, Japan DEPENDS upon imports. Countries can always boycott, embargo, or restrict exports. Therefore, Japan, like Britain, sought territories abroad. Whereas Britain colonized; Japan conquered. Colonization is a comparatively "peaceful" enterprise, whereas "conquering" another nation is considered an act of war. Taking other countries by force of arms, was necessary in order to gain the "raw materials" within those countries; e.g. oil and precious metals, as well as industrial metals. These were the reasons for Japan's Imperialism.
