Killer whales are not extinct. It is not known the total numbers of Killer Whales in the oceans today, but long term research and study is being preformed to help determine their migration routes, their feeding, and breeding habits, and how to better estimate their population numbers. Since 2008, the IUCN has declared the Killer Whale species (Orcinus orca) as 'data deficient' due to taxonomic classification issues. They are not certain that all populations belong to the same species. There is a group of KWs designated by scientists as the "AT1 transient population" that was severely affected by the oil spill from the Exxon Valdez in March of 1989. This group is expected to soon die out. So the short answer, unfortunately, as is the case for so many animal extinctions, human intervention. The longer answer is that this apex predator, sometimes known as the Orca gladiator of the world's seas is not yet extinct.
