The reason for the magnet in the oil pan is to catch any metal shavings or metal fragments from inside the engine from wear when engine is running very common to see this old school trick also means someone has possibly rebuilt your engine or atleast been inside of it
The oil pan is bolted to the bottom of the engine
The oil pump is located inside the oil pan; To get to the oil pump you have to take off the oil pan.
The oil pan must be removed.

How do I take the oil pan off The oil pump is on the front of the engine behind the main pulley on the Crankshaft, behind the timing belt. NOT in the Oil Pan.
Tighten to 20 foot pounds. Do not overtighten.
1" Wrench or socket on the bottom of the pan.
The oil drain plug on an 89 Toyota 4Runner is located on the bottom of the engine. It is positioned on the left side of the oil pan for easy access and draining.
