During the reign of the Mughal emperor Jahangir, Sikhs started facing religious victimization. To protect themselves from the violence of the Mughal rulers, Guru Gobind Singh Ji the tenth Guru of the Sikhs formed the Khalsa a military group of baptized Sikhs solely for defense. The members of the Khalsa were supposed to wear the five articles of faith or the Panj Kakke (Five K's) with externally symbolize the devotion of the Sikh. The Sikhs who adorn all five K's are known as the Amritdhari Sikhs while the others are known as Sahajdhari Sikhs.

The five K's are:

1. Kesh- Uncut hair. Hair is considered a gift from god, thus left uncut.

2. Kangha- A wooden comb. Used to keep hair tidily under the turban.

3. Kara- An iron bracelet. A reminder to follow the moral path of their faith.

4. Kaccha- a specific style of cotton underwear. A reminder to control the Five Evils.

5. Kripaan- A curved sword strapped to the body. Symbolized the Khalsa's responsibility as a Sikh to protect the innocent in a message of peace.

Who wears a turban?

In the Western countries (United States, England, Australia, and Canada), the people that wear turbans are Sikhs. There are two types of turbans that Sikhs wear: Dastar and Patka. The patka is what Sikh male teenagers wear. The Patka is not actually a turban, but it serves the same purpose as the dastar. The dastar is the large turban that Sikh male adults wear to keep their uncut hair inside. Men in the Middle East also wear turbans. There are two kinds of turbans in the Middle East: Amamah and Keffiyeh. The Keffiyeh is not technically a turban, but it serves the same purpose as an Amamah (turban), to keep your head cool from the extreme heat. The Keffiyeh is also a pice of cloth tied to your head, but with different material and way of tying. The Sikh turbans are peaked and of various colors. The Middle Eastern turbans are White, Black, or Green.
