Because Mexico City lies on the dessicated remains of Lake Texcoco, which was dried during colonial times (1600-1800s). Nowadays, the basin still has plenty of underground water, and the soil is quite moist. During an earthquake, the city suffers an effect known as soil liquefaction, which transforms a the ground into a quicksand-like substance. Many buildings sink or crumble due to this effect.

On the other hand, Acapulco is situated over the Sierra Madre del Sur mountain range. This means that during an earthquake, Acapulco would suffer much less from its effects, due to its solid ground.
