This is probably due to an electronic glitch or a broken fuse. You should have your vehicle looked at by a professional at your local mechanic or car dealership to correct the problem. No odometer reading can lead to future problems when you will go and sell you car (or trade it in) because the true mileage will not be available.
There is no synchronizer gear in these, so you do the synchronization. You're not going to learn about it by reading about it... perhaps a truck driving school would be in order.
If you cannot see the odometer reading on a 1991 BMW 525i, it could be due to a faulty odometer gear, a burned-out bulb, or a malfunctioning instrument cluster. First, check the dashboard lighting to ensure it's not simply dim. If the lights are functioning, you may need to inspect or replace the odometer gear, which is a common issue in older BMWs. If you're unsure, consulting a mechanic or a specialist in vintage BMWs may be advisable.
If your 2002 Audi's odometer is reading 999,999, it may be due to a malfunction or a failure in the odometer gear. To fix it, you can try resetting the instrument cluster by disconnecting the car battery for a few minutes, then reconnecting it. If the issue persists, you may need to replace the instrument cluster or repair the odometer gear, which typically requires professional assistance. Always consult your vehicle's manual or a qualified mechanic for specific guidance.
My speedometer works and the odometer does not because there is a plastic gear in the odometer that is broken.

I've had the Gear on the tail shaft come loose where the cable goes into the transmission.
On my 1994 there is a button in the end of the gear shift arm. This turns off the overdrive and the dash says "Overdrive Off" above the odometer and gas mileage messages. Other than that, I don't know.

the plastic gear in the cluster that drives the odometer and the tripmeter is probly broken ..
The little pot metal gear on the odometer shaft is slipping. The speedo needs to be opened up, and that gear either superglued to the shaft or replaced.
If the speedometer works, but the odometer is not working, there could be a fuse blown if the odometer is digital. If the odometer is not digital, then a gear is broken in the speedometer cable. It should be replaced.
