What are the chemical properties of soda ash?

As far as I can tell, soda crystals, aka washing soda, is Sodium Carbonate, with the formula Na(sub)2CO(sub)3. Not to be confused with baking soda, aka Bicarbonate of Soda, (very) aka "bicarb", which is Sodium Bicarbonate or Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate (depending upon when and where you studied your chemistry), and has the quite similar formula NaHCO(sub)3. Soda Crystals (aka Washing Soda) are technically Sodium Carbonate Decahydrate with the formula Na2CO3.10H2O. Baking Soda is not technically Bicarbonate of Soda (or Sodium Bicarbonate). Baking Soda has other ingredients for baking, such as raising agents.

What is the Molecular formula of sodas?

Soda is an ambiguous term that could mean any of several different things. It's been used to refer to sodium carbonate Na2CO3, sodium hydrogen carbonate NaHCO3, sodium hydroxide NaOH, and sodium oxide Na2O. It also is used to mean carbonated beverages, which are mixtures, not compounds, and therefore don't have molecular formulae.

How is Na2CO3 prepared by solvay process?

Sodium chloride and calcium carbonate are used raw materials and Ammonia is used as tie compound to perform replacement chemical reactions. With a process flow diagram the preparation can be explained in simple way, source: http://www.inclusive-science-engineering.com/sodium-carbonate-manufacturing-synthetic-processes-chlor-alkali-industry/production-of-soda-ash-by-solvay-process/#main

Explain why calcium hydroxide can be used in this way?

Calcium hydroxide is used to test for carbon dioxide because the product of the reaction, calcium carbonate, is insoluble, and easily visible.

Why only 10H2O in sodium carbonate deca hydrate?

Sodium carbonate decahydrate is the name of the compound Na2CO3·10H2O, because 'deca' means 'ten'.The term hydrated sodium carbonate is commonly used to encompass the monohydrate (Na2CO3·H2O), the decahydrate and the heptahydrate (Na2CO3·7H2O).Both the hepta- and the decahydrate are partially transformed into the monohydrate thermonatrite Na2CO3·H2O when left over in dry air.Anhydrous (no H2O) sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) is formed when heating Na2CO3·H2O or NaHCO3 or Na3H(CO3)2·2H2O (trona) up to 150o-200oC (this is called calcination).

Chemical test to differentiate nitrate nitriteusing soda extract?

First prepare the soda extract/sodium extract-Take 0.5g of the salt mixture that you want to analyze for nitrate ions in a porcelain dish. To this add 1.5 g of pure(anhydrous) Na2CO3 (Sodium Carbonate) and 10 mL of distilled water.Heat the mixture. When it begins boiling, the basic radicals in the salt will get converted to the respective carbonates and dissolve. Filter the mixture and throw the residue. The filtrate is called SODA EXTRACT.Now you shall perform the Brown Ring Test for presence of nitrate ions using this soda extract.Neutralize the soda extract with DILUTE H2SO4( this neutralizing acid is used only for detecting nitrate ions.....other acids are used for different ions ) , add FeSO4 to the test tube and shake well.Carefully add CONCENTRATED H2SO4 from the side of the test tube wall. A brown ring of FeSO4No is formed at the junction of the two liquids. (Concentrated sulphuric acid will not sink down, it will be like a layer of oil above the FESO4 +dilute h2so4+soda extract mixture with the brown ring between it.)

What type of test can be used to identify calcium carbonate?

Is Na2CO3 a molecule or compound?

No, its considered an ionic compound since it is Na+ cation and OH- anion that bond together (in this case tis just a polyatomic ionic compound).

What is the common primary standard used in the laboratory to standardize of NaOH and HCl?

Sodium Carbonate (Na2CO3) is most commonly used to standardise acids as it is non-hygroscopic (doesn't absorb water from the atmosphere).Oxalic Acid (HOOCCOOH or H2C2O4) used to standardise bases

What is the Solvay process?

The Solvay process (named after Ernest Solvay, who perfected it) is used to make sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) and sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) from limestone and brine, using ammonia as a catalyst. In the US, the Solvay process is no longer used because we have deposits of the mineral Trona in Wyoming, and it's cheaper to mine these products than to synthesize them.
