Well... it was.

To the guy who answered with the response "well...it was", you are an ignorant moron. Jazz was indeed created in New Orleans. Jazz is characterized as a confluence of African and European sounds, and no where else was the presence of the two so intertwined. New Orleans Jazz is a collection of instruments, a special, variated but consistent sequence of sounds created by lengends such as Louis Armstrong and Pete Fountain. New Orleans Jazz is for dancing, not listening. It is also made in Brass bands, the big bands with tubas and trombones and infrequent singing. You can only find this sound, with these instruments, in New Orleans. The talent for it is here, and the love for it is here. The New Orleans JAZZ FEST is the largest jazz fest in the world, and there is not a night in town where there isn't at least 40 jazz concerts going on.

Also, if with your response you were referring to Katrina, every single Jazz club in the French Quarter is open and was never shut down for more than a few months.

New Orleans was ripe for the birth of jazz because of the blending of the different populations. The blacks in the city, the French, and the local white wealthy people wanted to put their music styles together.

What is the second city of jazz?

After New Orleans, which has been called the "Birthplace of Jazz", many say that Kansas City is the second. Kansas City was a place where the 'big band sound' took off, with artists such as Glen Miller pioneering this form of music. Musicians also migrated there because of the popularity of jazz in the south meant that work was harder to find. At around the same time jazz made its way to Chicago, Los Angeles, and most importantly: New York - where bebop was 'created'.
