To Roman Catholics, Rome is a holy city because the Vatican is in Rome, and the Vatican is the organizational center of the Roman Catholic Church. We could also note that historically, Christianity only became popular after the Roman Emperor Constantine converted to Christianity and gave the religion his support, so in a very real sense, the Roman Empire, and hence the city of Rome, were central to the success of Christianity in establishing itself as the world's most popular religion.
