Russia is big because over the years is has just consumed smaller more tribal areas which were a lot weaker. Next thing they knew they had reached Japan!
Considering it is so big the population is very low because most of it is just uninhabitable waste land with the lowest temperatures on earth. This, again is another reason why other countries were unable to conquer it in the past....
