sound needs a medium to travel. material medium is necessary for propogation of sound. in vaccum sound do not travel. that's the reason why we are not able to hear sound in this case. Jordi101

Take an electric bell and hang this bell inside an empty bell-jar fitted with a vacuum pump (as shown in the following figure). Initially, one can hear the sound of the ringing bell. If you call it by its correct name "vacuum flask" the principle becomes clear. The flask consists of an inner and outer chamber, the space between the chambers is a vacuum. A vacuum cannot conduct heat, hence no losses between the two chambers.
