Why after telling your Narc ex-partner to remove all their belongings would they not take items they know belong to them out in plain view for them to see even though they are living with someone new?

Because as long as you have those items, they have a reason to see or talk to you. They have a connection to you. It's power because how can you move on if he leaves his stuff with you? Narcissists like to keep in touch with exes. Mines use to leave his things all the time. Things that a normal person would value...designer clothes, pictures of our children, expensive shoes. Once he even left his beloved cellphone. My guess for this nonchalant attitude is because a narcissist views EVERYTHING and EVERYONE as an object. These things mean nothing to them including humanbeings. Once he looses the new supply source he'll leave his things there as well. This is too funny because my Narc did the same thing!!! I think they do that so they can always come back. Because they still want to be the main focus in your life. They leave reminders with hopes these things will trigger memories and create longing for them. I think the best thing to do is give his stuff back or throw it out. Its a control thing with these types. I think they find it hard to accept that you just might move on and forget all about them.
