Why am I being told that a transmission for a 3.4L is not compatible for a 3.8L and vise versa in a 2004 Chevy Impala?

because the final drive ratio for the 3.8 is 3.29 and the 3.4 is 2.86 the computer would have to be reflashed or differentials swapped
